Food Allergies affect approximately 500,000 children across Canada. Cow Milk Allergy (CMA) is the most common food allergy in infancy and early childhood.

Infants and children with cow milk allergy often present with gastrointestinal symptoms such as:
Many babies vomit, especially after feeding. However, if a baby is frequently vomiting, it would be advisable to consult a doctor as it could be related to cow milk allergy.
Reflux is common in infants younger than one year. In 40% of infants, severe reflux may be linked to cow milk allergy. If your baby is having frequent severe reflux and/or is spitting-up, discuss it with your doctor.
Persistent diarrhea, or multiple loose liquid stools, is a common digestive symptom in infants with CMA. Constipation is a less common symptom than diarrhea, however if it occurs in conjunction with other symptoms it may indicate cow milk allergy.
Blood in the stool is a result of irritation in the gut and could be a sign of cow’s milk allergy in infants.
Sticky mucus in the stool has the same appearance as the mucus from a runny nose. A little bit can be normal, but if it is abundant, or it persists, it is important that you inform your doctor.
Gassiness is caused by too much air in the stomach or intestines. This leads to discomfort, and your baby may appear cranky or colicky. While all babies can be gassy at times, if it occurs in conjunction with other symptoms, it may indicate cow milk allergy.
Colic, or crying continuously and inconsolably for long periods, is unusual. It usually means the baby is suffering from abdominal pain or other factors. The rule of the “3s” can be applied: if your baby cries for 3+ hours per day, 3+ days per week, for over 3 weeks, then talk to your doctor for a proper diagnosis
Many infants with cow milk allergy have symptoms that affect their skin.
Cow milk allergy-related rashes usually appear on the face. However, they can appear elsewhere on the body. The rashes tend to be itchy, and result in discomfort. They may also get worse after feeding.
Babies with cow milk allergy might show some mild or severe respiratory symptoms.
Mild respiratory symptoms are like those of the common cold, including a runny nose, sneezing, coughing and congestion.
Severe respiratory symptoms would include shortness of breath, difficulty breathing or wheezing. Consult with a medical professional immediately in case of any serious respiratory issues.
Immediate reaction to cow milk protein ingestion, including severe respiratory and/or cardiovascular symptoms. If you suspect your child is having an anaphylactic reaction, seek medical help immediately.
Inadequate weight gain and poor growth can be related to CMA specially if combined with one or more of the other CMA symptoms.
