Multiple Food Allergies (MFA), is a food-related allergy in which the individual has an allergy to cow milk and 1 or more other foods. In Canada about 500,000 children have food allergies.
MFA can be overwhelming for families as it can be hard to cook meals, order in restaurants, and constantly watch what children eat.
However, formulas like Neocate® are specially created to help in the dietary management of children with MFA and other related GI and allergic conditions. You may be wondering, what the relationship is between EoE and MFA because in many cases patients with EoE have multiple food allergies because , patients with EoE can react to more than one food.
Though it is common for people with EoE to have multiple food allergies, EoE is a result of too many eosinophils (white blood cells) collected in the esophagus. It is a unique food-allergy condition.
MFA is when you are diagnosed as having cow milk allergy and 1 or more food allergies. These allergic reactions occur due to the immune system reacting to proteins in foods that are considered allergens.
Like other food allergies, doctors are still trying to understand why some individuals develop multiple food allergies and others don’t.
There is currently no cure for MFA. The best way to manage multiple food allergies remains avoidance of the foods that trigger an allergic reaction.
For breastfed babies with allergies to multiple foods, the first step is for Mom to talk to her doctor about the need to follow a maternal elimination diet eliminating the relevant food allergens from her diet. This must be done under medical supervision. It may be challenging mom to get all the key nutrients, so she should talk with her doctor about the need to supplement her diet.
There may also be a need to supplement or replace breast milk for the baby, in which case an amino acid-based formula like Neocate is sometimes recommended.
